FORT HALL — On Tuesday, June 10, three newly-elected members of the Fort Hall Business Council took the oath of office, including Ladd R. Edmo (incumbent), Russell D. Haskett, and Nathan Small. The swearing-in was administered by Fort Hall Bureau of Indian Affairs Superintendent Dawn D. Davis.

Council officer positions will be determined following the outcome of a special election scheduled for Friday, June 20, between incumbent Lee Juan Tendoy and challenger Louise S. Dixey.

The special election was called by the Tribal Election Board after a tie vote was confirmed during a hand recount on June 4. The decision aligns with the Board’s constitutional duty to ensure a fair and transparent election process.

With the conclusion of his term, former Fort Hall Business Council Chairman Lee Juan Tendoy has respectfully stepped aside to allow the special election process to move forward. His decision reflects a commitment to uphold the integrity of Tribal governance and honor the will of the people.

As part of the swearing-in ceremony, Gifferd Osborne posted the colors, accompanied by the Spring Creek Singers who offered a flag, victory, and honor songs. Pete Broncho gave an opening prayer.

Outgoing Councilmember Nancy Eschief Murillo was recognized by her fellow Councilmembers for her dedicated service to the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes and was presented with a Pendleton blanket for her contributions.

In her parting remarks, Eschief Murillo emphasized the importance of protecting the Tribal members amid current federal challenges, particularly regarding trust responsibilities. She called for the new Council to be strong and advocate on behalf of the people.

“We as Indian people need to fight,” she said. “Use our own weapons, the pen, our voices.”

She also reminded Councilmembers that their authority stems from the people. She encouraged greater Tribal member involvement with the Council, while reminding them to help those most in need.

The Tribal Election Board encourages all eligible Tribal voters to participate in the June 20 special election from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the district polling locations.
