Hello Tribal Members,
The Fish and Game Department wanted to give a reminder and some tips for the changing weather as winter is here.
Please be mindful of changing weather and road conditions especially in the higher elevations. Snow has accumulated in the foothills and mountain areas. Please know the limitations of your vehicle and equipment. With the snow and mud, conditions are very slick and your vehicle will be prone to sliding off the road.
Make sure that you are prepared…carry a shovel or other gear in case you get stuck. Remember, tire chains are for getting you out of a situation, not further in. Getting stuck is only one of the hazards, your vehicle may experience problems such as a breakdown. Keep snacks, water, blankets and warm clothing in your vehicle for such an emergency.
If you should have a situation happen in the high country, remember it is much safer for you to stay with your vehicle. The number one mistake people make is leaving their vehicle, leaving them open to the risk of exposure.
Remember, your safety and others traveling with you is your responsibility. Check weather conditions before going out. Evaluate road conditions…just because you have a really cool four wheel drive doesn’t make you invincible. If it doesn’t feel right, maybe it isn’t right. Turn around to avoid getting stuck or having a breakdown.
And the Biggest reminder we can give you is…always let somebody know the area you are travelling to…try not to deviate from the location given, otherwise you risk being the needle in the haystack searchers are searching for
Take care and stay safe during the winter season. Happy holidays.
